Introduction of TOMS at ESB
Munich, May 2006
German gas distribution company Erdgas Südbayern (ESB) plans to
systematically optimise the core processes of their network operation with
the technical information and maintenance system TOMS.
The decision was
made in May 2006 and based on a detailed specification and a thorough
market analysis. The contract between ESB and Berit includes implementing all TOMS modules and its interconnection to the existing geographical information system Smallworld GIS.
The main reason why ESB have selected the technical information system is the fact that
TOMS covers all the key processes related to
the gas distribution - order processing,
planning and construction of the distribution
network, its day-to-day operation as well as
maintenance.
References and proven
installations also played an important role.
Last but not least, ESB highly appreciated the
possibility to integrate TOMS with
Smallworld GIS, thus utilising existing geographical
data without the necessity to keep
duplicate databases.
At the same time TOMS
can be regarded as the interface between GIS
and SAP which links the technical processes
with the commercial side using data from both core systems. In this process-oriented
way of system integration, sustainable cost
reductions may be realised in the medium
term.
Other projects have proven that the
point of return on investment will already be
reached after one to two years. TOMS is
scheduled to be put into operation at ESB in
December 2006.
ESB is a gas distribution company, which
supplies gas to about 250 cities, towns and villages in the area of 20.000 square km between
Bavarian Forest and the Alps.
