Smallworld GIS at Stadtwerke Unna –
Business
benefits through standardisation
Unna, Paderborn, August 2006
In 2005, medium-sized utility company Stadtwerke Unna GmbH put a new GIS generation into effect. Starting from scratch, the old GIS “IRIS” system was replaced by a comprehensive Smallworld 4.0 solution and the entire network was digitised while the system was set up.
One key factor in the decision making process was the delivery of the standard data models and industry-specific applications
Smallworld NRM (Electricity and Gas Network Resource Managers). The main
objectives in the project were to achieve early system productivity and to boost the
deployment by business users.
Smallworld Field & colibri
By providing a universally accepted operational concept for all users all application cases are covered. Hence, users working at their GIS work station, as well
as users of the Smallworld Field mobile
solution, are supplied with a nearly identical look-and-feel.
Smallworld Field was deployed in conjunction with a ruggedised pencomputer (colibri) and a Leica GPS 1200 rover. In this way, not only the
viewing of maps and attribute data was put
into practice but also a data round trip that allows sketching and attribute update by
field engineers, including data update and
capturing via GPS. A total of eight Smallworld Field clients are running on
seven ruggedised tablet-PCs and on one
in-house work station.
Network Calculation
Based on the acquired GIS data, the utilisation of the Smallworld Geographical Information System is extended towards
further important application areas.
Network operation at Stadtwerke Unna is
supported by calculation programs implying GIS data. Via a standardised systems
interface, the data is conveyed to the Siemens’ SINCAL calculation program, allowing thorough analyses. Moreover,
Stadtwerke Unna will use Mettenmeier’s Operation Analyser for day-to-day
calculations.
Integration of Street Lighting
Beside Smallworld GIS, Stadtwerke Unna deploys the software Communa-Lux for
technical and operational management of street lighting, allowing for capture and
specification of all technical and
organisational data, repairs and maintenance, periodical energy billing and
rationalisation of energy, etc. Via Oracle-interface, GIS object data like lamp
numbers are displayed in Communa-Lux.
