SAP/GIS Integration with Enterprise Integration Services for Smallworld GIS
Enterprise Integration Services
To provide frictionless interaction between SAP and Smallworld GIS, utility companies use Mettenmeier’s well-established service-oriented integration technology. This service connector opens up Smallworld GIS via the so-called Enterprise Integration Services (EIS) and permits full use of the integration functionality of SAP.
Smallworld EIS facilitates the initial matching of data and the modification of mass data and leads to significant reduction in total cost of ownership and operation.

Brilliant implementation plan
A modular implementation plan stretches from the simple front end connection, through data integration and synchronisation of business assets or "objects", to networking of the most important business processes such as maintenance and fault management. The introduction of modern integrated platforms in conjunction with the Enterprise Integration Services enables the rapid and economical integration of SAP and GIS.
Background
SAP and GIS form the most important building blocks of most energy supply businesses. The advantages of integrating these two systems are obvious: Smallworld GIS and the SAP PM and IS-U modules both contain and handle customer data such as consumption figures as well as information on the resources and assets of the business. These may include data on house connections, sub-stations and their internal structures and fittings, hydrants or cable distribution boxes.
The requirements of system integration can best be met through a service-oriented IT approach. Mettenmeier’s Enterprise Integration Services conform to this philosophy. Smallworld GIS data and process models for the utilities industries are easily and flexibly exploited in conjunction with modern system integration platforms such as SAP XI, IBM WebSphere or Microsoft BizTalk, as well as the already well known SAP Business Connector.
EAI tools such as SAP XI enable complex and diverse IT systems to be simplified and standardised. Other systems covering a range of different activities can be readily connected. Mettenmeier's Enterprise Integration Services opens up the Smallworld GIS to the harmonisation of information and business processes across technical and organisational boundaries. XML/SOAP web services, which form the basis for this, are ideal for integration within a SAP NetWeaver or SAP XI system environment.
